Cooking in an Emergency

Cooking in an Emergency
Prepared by: Jeffrey Huefner

The method used to cook when the usual utilities are not available will be influenced by the food you need to prepare.  The following tools can be used to cook foods in an emergency.

If you have MRE's you have the following ways to prepare them:
            Eat cold
Use heating packs available where MRE's are sold
Placing the MRE in boiling water
Opening the MRE and heating in it frying pan

Dehydrated and Freeze dried foods require hot water and/or cooking in a pan or oven.

Canned food can be eaten cold, open and heated in the can, heat up in a pan or oven.

Basic food supplies will generally need to be cooked in a pan or oven.

The following are some of the pieces of cooking equipment available or usable in an emergency:

Your propane grill, especially if it has a side burner.  Use out doors.
