Heating and Cooking without Electricity

Heating and Cooking without Electricity

Cooking Fuel Options

Propane
     Positives:
  • Stores indefinitely.
    Readily available.
    Inexpensive.
Negatives:
  • Leaking gas can accumulate and explode. Remember that if you have a propane barbecue, it is wise to always have an extra tank that is always full in case of and emergency. Remember to inspect and maintain all propane tanks and attachments at least once a year
Charcoal
     Positives:
  • Inexpensive. Stores indefinitely if kept dry.
     Negatives:
  • Difficult to ignite if not very dry. Toxic fumes in closed areas.

If nothing else, some cord wood, a shovel, rocks or old bricks for a fire ring and a Dutch Oven is a great, practical cooking option, regardless of the weather. And don't forget something, like matches. There are several additional cooking options available. Be wise in what you choose to use. Sometimes, the simplest is the best.

Heating Fuel Options

Wood
Positives:
  • Free if you cut your own. Fumes are not toxic like charcoal. Usually readily available.

Negatives:
  • Requires large storage space. Some wood burns better and longer than others. Another advantage is, if you  plan on purchasing a wood stove to heat your house, you may want to consider obtaining one that allows you to cook on as well.

There are several other fuel options for heating that may be beneficial for you, depending on your knowledge, experience and abilities. Alcohol, Kerosene, White Gas, and Butane and Solar. Each have there advantages and disadvantages, so study out your options, remember to factor your budget and do what you are able to do from where you are today.
